I'm currently involved in a government initiative to share data between colleges and the INS using XML. A lot of the specification that the gov't has released seems half-baked, and lacking the kind of precedent or acknowledgement of prior art that us architects like to see. This Infoworld article reports on how the GAO is voicing similar doubts on disparate federal initiatives to achieve the same lofty goal of data integration, but without the key element of centralized inter-agency coordination.
Repeat after me: Don't use XML because everyone else is. That is wrong. Bad dog.
There are plenty of good reasons to use XML. Trendiness is not one of them.
