Sun, Zend push scripting for Java. (via Daily Python-URL)
Oracle, Macromedia, Zend and Sun began the effort on May 19 by forming a group within Sun's Java Community Process (JCP) standardization program. On June 9, the JCP's Executive Committee gave the group approval to begin work on an official Java standard, called Java Specification Request 223.
I have to say that as much as it annoys me to deploy code in the Windows world, Microsoft has historically been *very* friendly to scripting, exposing interfaces in it's office apps etc to p(ython|erl|hp) and having it just work. It's confused me that Sun has pointedly ignored this market for as long as it has. Well, maybe not confused - the conspiracy theorist in me says that it's all about keeping things complex enough to justify the pricing of app servers and j2ee licensing.
I hope they actually follow through on this.
