Confusingly Quick

How does the Accelerated Knoppix LiveCD boot up on my home desktop/laptop XP systems faster than hard-drive installed XP?

My wife's been complaining about the speed of the home computer for a while now ... She always runs in Guest/Least Privilege mode, so I'm pretty sure the only software that's running is what I've put there. I've been disabling services and startup, but the 2GHz/512M Dell still really crawls and I can't figure it out.

I ran across Accelerated Knoppix, and wanted to see if that would solve the speed issue, as well as providing security similar to VMWare's Browser Appliance. It does work for speed, and it really shouldn't. Even running the apps of the CD rom is faster than my crippled (normal?) XP install. Perplexed and happy, I'm now looking forward to getting a USB Flash drive for settings persistence.
